Fire Road…A Must Read!
Several years ago, my church in Virginia, had a special speaker…one who was not familiar to me. The gentleman who spoke was Kim Phuc’s son. He brought several copies of a book with him to sell and the book happened to be about his mother, Kim Phuc! My husband, Kevin, asked me to purchase a copy and that’s exactly what I did.
Personally, I wasn’t really enthused or expecting this read to inspire me, but boy was I wrong!! As I sat down one day, I picked up the book and started reading. One page led to another, which led to another, which led to…you get the idea. Before long, I couldn’t even put the book down! Needless to say, Fire Road travelled with me to many places. I teared up and even cried throughout the book. This deep story moved and inspired me!
On the cover of the book lies the famous Pulitzer prize-winning photograph of Kim during the Vietnam War in 1972. She was a little girl at the time. When her hometown was bombed, napalm melted off her skin and clothes. Such a terrible tragedy caused everything to turn upside down in her life and many other lives.
Kim Phuc was plagued by the ongoing pain of her burned skin and also used as propaganda for ending the Vietnam War. She wanted to die and almost did, but was miraculously nurtured and cared for by family, friends, and strangers. She lived through so much tragedy and fear, but God was teaching her to let go and forgive.
