6 Classy Virginia Fall Destinations
Need a Break…or Time Away?
Living in Virginia for five years has had its perks and I’m thankful for my husband who loves to explore along with me! Virginia is full of beautiful destinations such as: Historical Homes, Buildings & Towns, Horse Farms, Vineyards, Orchards, Mountains, Caves, Bed & Breakfast Inns, Battlefields & Civil War History, National Parks, Hiking & Cycling Trails…I could go on and on and on! There will never be a boring day in Virginia–if you set out for an adventure! I always tell visitors and new movers, “You’ll never run out of things to do and see here.” Enjoy the ride!!
Monticello, Charlottesville, VA
Oh, wow…where do I begin?! This property is so beautiful and full of history! From his home, lie 360 degree mountain views. Thomas Jefferson was a true genius, to say the least. You must ask questions and pay close attention to all the details of his house. He had wires running up and over the doors for a cool, but very specific purpose. Once, I heard when he was a teenager, he wrote two different languages at the same time–one with each hand. Wow!! Pretty awesome, huh?!?
Occoquan Historical District, Prince William County, VA
Ok, so this is one of my favorite little historical towns in VA. It runs along the Potomac River and it’s beauty and history is rich! They have a great Mom’s Apple Pie bakery–you can literally find about 15 types of homemade pie right here! Did someone say pie?!? There are several super cute shops and a lovely walk along the water. You can also kayak or paddle board as well. I’ve seen people take their dogs with them! It’s a very friendly and chill environment you won’t want to miss. Don’t forget their cool puzzle store–they have thousands of puzzles! Occoquan also has a town Christmas tree lighting ceremony. Such fun!
I’m reminded of the song Shenandoah played by Irish violinist, Mairead Nesbitt. It’s one of the most beautifully played versions I’ve heard of this song! Shenandoah National Park is definitely a gorgeous Fall destination! Usually, Mid-October is the perfect time of year to soak in the colorful Fall foliage. There are different lookouts you can drive by and take pics~they become higher and higher, so each lookout gives a different view. First, you may want to look up ticket prices to enter into the park, unless you carry a seasonal or annual pass. While here, check out Luray or Shenandoah Caverns. Luray Caverns are among the largest in eastern America.
Neabsco Creek Boardwalk, Prince William County, VA
Need a little nature walk, but not a hike? This is the place for you! A 3/4 mile boardwalk greets you in this lovely, but missed spot of Virginia. If you look close enough, these wetlands boast tadpoles, frogs, fish, beavers, snakes and a few birds. Runners, walkers, and cyclists alike love this little serene, often quiet place to get away and enjoy the great outdoors. It’s family and pet friendly–even has a little hike into the forest at the very end of the boardwalk. Go check it out!
Historic Downtown Fredericksburg, VA
My husband and I love to visit this little town. It’s the perfect little getaway shopping area~not talking about grocery shopping…but cute, little hole-in-the-wall shops you’ll want to check out! Kevin’s sister and brother-in-law live in Ireland with their children. He loves to visit the Irish store, Irish Eyes. Fredericksburg is a historic district for sure! It has a slew of war history and battlefield sites. This place will keep you busy all day!
Town of “Little Washington,” VA
You’ll definitely not want to miss this cute, little historical place! It was once said that a young George Washington surveyed this land in the 1700’s. Thus, calling the town, “Little Washington.” This small village is nestled within the Blue Ridge Mountains. Such a beautiful escape away from the craziness of life! There is a famous five star, French restaurant called, “The Inn at Little Washington.” It’s quite a snazzy little place and top-notch! Be prepared to fork out a few dollars $$$ to stay and eat here. If you just want to look around–there are a couple of shops and other historical sites in the area. From here, the views of the mountains are to die for!
