Hannah
Hannah was born around the 11th century B.C. As one of two wives, she desperately prayed for a baby boy. She was not able to have kids like the other wife, or so she thought. Every year, Hannah went to the house of the Lord to weep and pray for a man child. Every year, she grew disappointed, until she grew old. After many years, Hannah still had the faith to pray and ask. Continuing to pray, Hannah had a son named Samuel, who turned out to be a prophet in Israel. She also had four more children! Check out her story in I Samuel 1-2.
Martha Washington
Martha was born in 1731 on a 500 acre plantation in Virginia. Yes, she was our 1st President’s wife! Little is probably known about her religious background, but she was a woman of faith. “Martha would retire to her room between 9am and 10am for her hour of meditation, reading and prayer. She also prayed, read the Bible, and sang hymns in the evening in preparation for bed.” The President’s family would gather for mealtime prayers and Sunday sermon readings. Their family Bible is housed in the Mount Vernon Museum in Mount Vernon, VA.
